Inspired by a 2015 trip to his former home near the Shenandoah Mountains in Virginia, Twin Cities guitarist Zacc Harris decided to connect with his Americana roots, taking simple, well-known songs from the American folk tradition and reimagining them with a contemporary jazz sensibility, reflecting on the idea of a lost America.
The trio, featuring bassist Matt Peterson and drummer Lars-Erik Larson, released its debut album in 2017. City Pages wrote, "It’s a collection of smart contemporary jazz interpretations of folk standards...Harris’ eloquent guitar work highlights pointed commentary with a deft array of melodic abstractions, tempo shifts and harmonic changes." All About Jazz says, "the arrangements are full of fresh twists, all played with an understated warmth."
Harris has been a staple of the Twin Cities jazz scene since moving to Minneapolis in 2005. In that time, he has released a number of critically acclaimed albums with the collective group Atlantis Quartet and the Zacc Harris Group, the latter receiving a glowing 4 star review in Downbeat Magazine for its 2021 release Small Wonders which also made the magazine's Best Albums of the Year list. In 2017 he was named Best Twin Cities Jazz Artist by City Pages.
Sunday, July 14th at 2pm. Tickets are $15/$10 for Cadenza students with code CADENZAFAM.
